Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) since 1995. FHI has utilized the name "Outback" on two different Subaru-branded vehicles—a mid-sized station wagon based on the Subaru Legacy—and for North America only, a compact hatchback that derives from the Subaru Impreza

Outback (1995–present)

The "Outback" debuted in 1995 as a derivative of the second generation Subaru Legacy. Sold primarily as the "Subaru Legacy Outback", FHI opted to shorten the name to "Subaru Outback" in Australia when launched there in 1996. Lacking the finances to design an all-new vehicle, FHI developed the Outback by merely adding side body cladding and raising the suspension of the existing Legacy wagon. With exception to small differences in trim, the Outback shared almost all componentry with its Legacy donor model. Subaru released a new generation of Outback along with the equivalent Legacy in 1998. Following much the same formula as the original, the updated series of shared similar mechanicals and dimensions, but for North American markets, the abbreviated "Subaru Outback" title was specified. In 2003, Subaru released the another new model alongside the new Legacy. The current iteration of Outback debuted in 2009, with the shortened "Subaru Outback" name now being adopted in Europe.

Outback Sport (1995–2011)

Along with the Legacy-based model, FHI also released the "Subaru Outback Sport" in 1995 to North America only. As a derivative of the Subaru Impreza, the Sport, like the regular Outback, featured a raised suspension. Subaru launched subsequent generations in 2001 and 2007, with Subaru of North America adopting the global "Subaru XV" title for the third generation Outback Sport replacement.
