Japan to grant multiple-entry visas to individual Chinese tourists

TOKYO, May 13, Kyodo

The Japanese government has decided to grant three-year multiple-entry visas specifically for individual Chinese tourists planning to visit the three northeastern prefectures hit hardest by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, government sources said Sunday.

Japan is apparently aiming to attract Chinese tourists with high purchasing power to the disaster-hit areas to aid reconstruction, they said.

Chinese travel agencies are required to certify that a tourist will stay at least overnight in one of the three prefectures. Only individual tourists are eligible for the visas, which allow them to stay for 90 days during their first visit. The tourists will be free to stay anywhere in Japan from their second visit onward.
